In this post, I promote travel to a destination that is the traditional lands of the Alutiiq (Sugpiaq) peoples. With respect, I make a formal land acknowledgment, extending my appreciation and respect to the past and present people of these lands. To learn more about the peoples who call these lands home, I invite you to explore Native Land. The Glacier Quest Cruise takes you from the quaint seaside town of Whittier to glacier-filled Blackstone Bay. As your Captain departs the Cliffside Marina, look back towards town to see Whittier glacier.
The Alaska Map
My luggage that I stored during the boat tour was waiting for me, and I walked across the street to catch the train to Anchorage. If you want to take the train from Anchorage to Whittier, the 26 glacier cruise will work out. The check-in for a Phillips boat tour is literally right next to the Whittier cruise terminal. Cruise ships doing this route between Vancouver and Whittier sail through College Fjord before arriving in Whittier, and much of the 26 glacier cruise is also in College Fjord.

Northland Glacier rests majestically, clinging to the edge of the towering mountain. Blackstone and Beloit are tidewater glaciers that have carved a steep pathway to reach Prince William Sound’s saltwater. Cruise up close to these massive glaciers to watch for telltale signs of movement signaled by the distinct “pop” of glacier ice calving. Your cruise starts in Whittier and takes you to Blackstone Bay, a dramatic deep water fjord where two tidewater glaciers and several alpine glaciers await. Besides that, keep your eyes open for wildlife roaming the shores.
Inside Passage Alaska Cruise
More glaciers will come into view as you cruise down Passage Canal. Learn about the Native Alaskans who first settled in this region of Prince William Sound and how the military built the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel connecting Whittier to Interior Alaska. The M/V Glacier Quest is an 80-foot catamaran which holds 149 passengers on 3 decks, two of which are enclosed and heated with an inside seat and table for every passenger on board. Comfortable upholstered booths with tables are available for all passengers and the large picture windows provide a view from every seat. A saloon, snack bar and gift shop are a few of the other amenities available.
Our award-winning North to Alaska program brings local personalities, culture and cuisine on board and ashore to immerse you in all things Alaska during your cruise to the Great Land. We'll match you with a local itinerary expert to help you plan your trip. For shopping, the port area and downtown core offer plenty of stores.

Follow the glistening spray of waterfalls from the saltwater sea up the steep rock walks to find alpine glaciers perched on the mountain peaks. Take in all 360′ of the grandeur from the largest waterfalls to the smallest migratory birds or harbor seals resting on bits of glacier ice. When I arrived, the wildlife that was seen in the past week included breaching whales, dall’s porpoises, sea otters, sea lions, mountain goats, bears, and bald eagles. Rush across the snow on a dog sled with a professional musher, fly fish for salmon in fresh rivers and soar over miles of glacial tundra in a helicopter.
You’ll find many taxis and ride-share services at the airport to get you to Whittier, but be prepared. As for luggage, while there are no porters at this cruise ship terminal, there are luggage carts available for use. If you’re boarding your cruise at Whittier Cruise Port, there will be a luggage drop-off in the parking lot, and the cruise line will take care of loading your bags onto the ship. But glaciers are not common elsewhere, even in places meant to protect them – like Glacier National Park. So for many people – and perhaps you, dear reader – seeing glaciers is super high on their Alaska bucket list. In that case, Whittier is the best place to book a glacier viewing day cruise.
A complimentary lunch is included and you can select from 2 different meal options. Due to intermittent cell service when traveling in Alaska, we strongly recommend booking before travel. Ticketed guests can use our Express Check In upon arrival in Whittier.
College Fjord is the meeting place where many of Alaska’s glaciers congregate and flow to the ocean. At the water’s edge are massive valley glaciers and dozens of smaller monuments that dot the mountainous region. Thanks to the professors who first settled here in 1899, many of these glaciers are named after the country’s best institutions of higher learning, such as Harvard Glacier. Our cruise experts are enthusiastic and ready to talk about Alaska with you.
The dense spruce forest provides shelter for a variety of wildlife and migratory birds. Scan the crystal clear water for jellyfish and follow waterfalls from mountain peaks to the sea. You will see several glaciers, including Tebenkof Glacier, named for Mikhail Demitrievich Tebenkof, an outstanding surveyor whose maps were the first charts of Alaska’s waters published in 1852.
The onboard lunch includes wild Alaska smoked salmon chowder, fresh salad, a roll, and a sweet treat. Vegetarian/gluten free and child lunch options available when requested in advance. Additional snacks, hot and cold drinks, and adult beverages are available for purchase. These high-speed catamarans provide excellent stability and can usually accommodate guests who require the use of a wheelchair during the cruise. Located just 10 miles northeast of Anchorage, this immersive cultural center allows you to learn more about Alaska’s native population through demonstrations and interactive exhibits. If you want something more cosmopolitan, spend some time in Anchorage.
Your cruise starts in Whittier and takes you deep into Prince William Sound. You will get face to face with 26 “named” glaciers and many more unnamed. Keep your eyes open for bald eagles, sea otters and even humpback whales on this cruise. Icy Strait Point is home to the remote Tlingit village of Hoonah, home to fewer than 800 people and a deep Native history.
What lies beneath the waves is almost as impressive, where ice plunges 1,200 feet beneath the surface. From the sweeping mountains of Juneau to the fish-bearing seas of Ketchikan, discover our Alaska cruise ports and set sail into the adventures that await you. Alaska's seafood is famous, and we bring the best to you with locally inspired dishes from the state’s best eateries.
The nearby Spasski River Valley holds one of the world’s largest populations of brown bears, who are often found hunting for salmon in the rivers. Zipline over the wilderness, watch a tribal dance or kayak in coastal waters to see the wildlife up close during your Alaska cruise vacation. You can also spot bald eagles in the trees along the shore or on the wing across both parts of the coast. The scenery takes a dramatic turn from the thick forest along Passage Canal to towering mountains, revealing jaw-dropping beauty in Blackstone Bay.
